Mitch Epstein

Berlin

In 2008 Mitch Epstein won the Berlin Prize in Arts and Letters and was awarded a six-month residency at the American Academy in Berlin. Epstein set out to examine Berlin's layered and famously tormented history by photographing the remnants of its war and postwar histories. The resulting pictures convey the city's unique capacity for the contradictory and surreal, every image revealing a simultaneously dense and transparent city.
